BioGeelong in partnership with Business Biotics are pleased to present the second Breakfast Seminar for 2008: "Funding Options for Commercialising Innovations". The guest speakers are Dr Geoff Brooke - Managing Director, GBS Venture Partners and Dr Vernon Bowles, Chief Scientific Officer, Hatchtech Pty Ltd.
This seminar is one of the scheduled events for Smart Geelong Network's Research and Innovation Expo (10 - 16th August 2008).

After 3 years as BioGeelong Chair, Professor Andrew Parratt has decide to step aside as the Chair. Andrew will remain an active member of the BioGeelong Steering Group.
Dr James Campbell from ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd has accepted his nomination for the position of BioGeelong Chair and takes over from Andrew on 01 May 2008.
Following is a message from Andrew: Dear Steering Group Members and supporters I would like to thank you all for your support and generous words over the past 3 years. I would especially like to thank Darren Gray, Bree Gorman and Georgina Pearce, the COGG and the Victorian State government for their continuing contributions and assistance. Breakfast Seminar 06 March 2008: "Growing the Biotechnology Industry in the Geelong Region" BioGeelong in partnership with the Gordon Institute of TAFE are pleased to present the first Breakfast Seminar for 2008: "Growing the Biotechnology Industry in the Geelong Region". The guest speaker is Martin Lancaster who is the President of the North Carolina Community College System. Mr Lancaster will share his experiences in the development North Carolina's Biotechnology Workforce.

BioGeelong Symposium
On August 15th BioGeelong held its first half-day symposium at the Deakin Management Centre. Topics covered included BioSecurity, Stem Cells and BioActives. The day was a success, completely booked out and provided valuable networking time for local researchers.
Dr David Boyle and Prof Annabelle Duncan provided two insights into Australia's biosecurity. Annabelle took us on a tour through the history of bioterrorism and David detailed what Australia was doing to protect its borders from pests and disease. Prof Richard Boyd describe the research being conducted at Monash into stem cells and Assoc Prof Mark Kirkland showed the audience that Geelong was at the forefront of stem cell research as he has reprogrammed stem cells.
Finally, Prof Kevin Robards and Dr Xavier Conlan described the world of bioactives and functional foods and in particular the difficulty in identifying compounds with useful biological properties from complex food and beverage extracts.
Ausbiotech Vic BioForum '07
Ausbiotech held their inaugural Victorian Branch Conference at the Sheration Four Points in Geelong during August. The conference attracted 100 delegates from Victoria's biotechnology sector including Policy makers, CEO's and academics. On the first day Deakin University hosted an off site session which was a Geelong Showcase. Delegates received a tour of the Geelong Technology Precinct and heard presentations from James Campbell, Vice-President of Operations, Chemgenex Pharmaceuticals and Martyn Jeggo, Director of CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratories. The conference delegates were addressed by Minister Gavin Jennings and Councillor Bruce Harwood, Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong at the conference dinner. The conference was a huge success for Ausbiotech and the Geelong scientific community.

The Victorian Government's Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development is partnered with the Smart Geelong Network on Geelong's third Research and Learning Expo. There were over 20 events held across Geelong showcasing research and learning excellence. The week culminated in the Researcher of the year awards with Assoc Prof Mark Kirkland, Barwon Biomedical Research, taking out the top honours for his research into reprogramming stem cells.
New Materials for Biomedical Applications
During the Smart Geelong Network's research and learning expo, CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology hosted the latest BioGeelong Breakfast. Speakers from the Belmont facility and CSIRO Molecular and Health Technology presented their research into various materials for application in the human body. Examples were implants for vision correction and nanotubes to heal peripheral nerve damage.
Partnership with Indian Biotech
Deakin University has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BioCon, India's largest Biotechnology company. Deakin and BioCon plan to open a research institute in Bangalore that will accomodate approx. 100 research students. This partnership will also result in a number of gains for the Geelong community.
