About BioGeelong
In May 2005 a number of local organisations with a strong interest in biotechnology activities, including Barwon Health, ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals, CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory, Deakin University, Gordon Institute of TAFE, Pathcare Consulting Pathologists and the City of Greater Geelong, signed a Memorandum of Understanding which established BioGeelong. A steering group was formed comprising the BioGeelong foundation organisations.

More recently, CSIRO Textiles Fibre and Technology, Coulter Roache Lawyers, Business Biotics Group and the Department of Primary Industries Victoria (Marine and Freshwater Systems) have joined the BioGeelong Steering Group.

BioGeelong is an informal network of local organisations (it is not incorporated). The City of Greater Geelong provides administrative support to BioGeelong and acts as auspicing agency. Professor Andrew Parratt, Director BioDeakin, has been appointed inaugural chairman of BioGeelong.

The Victorian Government has provided financial support via the Regional Innovations Cluster Program to assist with the establishment of BioGeelong and to undertake foundation projects.

BioGeelong has recently established a formal relationship with the BioMelbourne Network, providing important linkages with the other precincts in the Victorian biotech sector.

BioGeelong's aim is to work collaboratively with relevant organisations and key stakeholders to establish the Geelong Region as a major Victorian biotechnology precinct and a significant player in the State Government's vision to position Victoria as one of the top five biotechnology locations in the world by 2010. In achieving this aim, BioGeelong has the following objectives:

  • To facilitate biotechnology industry development in the Geelong Region in partnership with appropriate local, state and federal agencies with particular emphasis on:
    - Cluster development that will strengthen innovation, productivity and competitive advantage.
    - Local industry advocacy that aims to influence government industry initiatives for the benefit of local biotechnology organisations; and
    - Industry investment activities including hosting delegations and providing a point of contact for firms wishing to explore partnering/collaboration opportunities with local organisations.
  • To broadly promote the Geelong Region's biotechnology capabilities, strengths and opportunities and to celebrate its successes.
  • To make available a dynamic networking environment that provides the stimulus for stakeholder collaboration.
