BioGeelong is an industry based network that has been formed to assist in growing the Geelong Region's biotech capability and to maximise the opportunities being generated by Geelong's world-class biotech activities.
The Geelong Region plans to become a globally significant biotech cluster and is well placed to achieve its vision, given its core strengths that include:
- Existing biotech capability - 450 researchers are employed in biotech or life science organisations with wages and salaries contributing in excess of $15 million to the local economy each year.
- Development of critical infrastructure such as West Connect or the Geelong Ring Road (which will improve north-south traffic flows within the City) and the further expansion of the Geelong Technology Precinct.
- A range of cost advantages of setting up business in Geelong plus the close proximity to Melbourne - the centre for biotechnology in Australia.
- Enviable lifestyle - the Geelong Region is home to some of the most spectacular coastal environs in the world making it easy to attract key personnel and staff.
BioGeelong is a network of Geelong based organisations and was established in 2005 to:
- Facilitate biotechnology industry development in the Geelong Region in partnership with appropriate local, state and federal agencies with particular emphasis on:
» Cluster development that will strengthen innovation, productivity and competitive advantage;
» Local industry advocacy that aims to influence government industry initiatives for the benefit of local biotechnology organisations; and
» Industry investment activities including hosting delegations and providing a point of contact for firms wishing to explore partnering/collaboration opportunities with local organisations.
- Broadly promote the Geelong Region's biotechnology capabilities, strengths and opportunities and to celebrate its successes.
- Make available a dynamic networking environment that provides the stimulus for stakeholder collaboration.
